Sunday, October 6, Ride the Katy Trail to Boonville, Missouri

What’s Involved:  Morning departure from Katy Trailhead at State Fairgrounds 38.1 miles to Boonville, or shorten the ride and depart from Clifton City (23.6 miles) or Pilot Grove (11.5 miles).  For those riding all the way to Boonville, snacks, drinks and lunch will be provided.  Shuttle back to Sedalia in the evening.  Riders will have time in Boonville to explore the historic town or take your chances at the casino.  The River, Rails, and Trails Museum, the old Katy Trail Bridge across the Missouri river, and the old 1848 Cooper County Jail and hanging barn are a few sights worth seeing in Boonville.

Wednesday, October 9, Rocheport to Jefferson City Katy Trail Ride (option to take the Amtrak back to Sedalia)

What’s Involved:  A day of bicycle riding from Rocheport to the Missouri capitol of Jefferson City, 37.1 miles.  Choose to shorten the ride and bike to Cooper’s Landing, 14 miles, and shuttle the rest of the way to Jefferson City.  This section of the Katy Trail is considered the most scenic of the 236 mile trail.  Riders will enjoy scenic bluffs, views of the Missouri River, small town Missouri charm, and history of the Lewis & Clark expedition.  Once in Jefferson City you may tour the capitol building or the old Missouri State Penitentiary.  The Amtrak train station is easily accessible in downtown Jefferson City and the train departs twice daily, so participants can decide to take the afternoon train back to Sedalia or stay overnight and return the next day.

Thursday, October 10, Rocheport to Cooper’s Landing (14 miles). This is a bicycling and birding outing.

What’s involved:  A day of bike riding and birding (or just birding if you want to skip the riding).  The day starts with a shuttle to Rocheport, Missouri which was voted #1 daytrip by readers of the Kansas City Star newspaper, and listed as the Top 10 Coolest Small Towns in America by Frommer’s.  After visiting Rocheport and enjoying lunch at the Meriweather Cafe, bike riders will depart for Eagle Bluffs Conservation area, one of Missouri’s top spots for birding.  Those not wanting to bicycle will be shuttled to the conservation area.  The day will finish up at Cooper’s Landing, my favorite spot on the Katy Trail to enjoy a beverage, listen to local music, and watch the Missouri River roll on by.

Date of Your Choosing-Bicycle westward on the Katy Trail towards Green Ridge, MO staying overnight at the Silos of Prairie Vale-9 miles.

What’s involved:  Ditch the “big city” of Sedalia and take a bicycle ride to the Osage Plains of Missouri, spending a night on a beautiful farm that operates as an AirBnB with lodging in renovated silos.  After the morning breakfast bicycle back to Sedalia or arrange a shuttle.  Call owners Doug and Wendy Needy to book at 573-280-3947 or check out the website for more information at www.thesilosatprairievale.com.  Book early as October is a busy month on the Katy Trail.  This is a self-guided ride so select the date you want to ride.  Make sure to pre-book a shuttle back to Sedalia with Katy Trail Tours & Shuttle if you plan not to bike ride on the return trip.
